Sending strength and support to Hawai’i
Dear AAPI Friends,
Our hearts break for all those in Hawai’i impacted by the ongoing wildfires, which have claimed at least 55 lives and displaced thousands. While first responders continue to search through the wreckage and stop the fires fueled by the dry summer and hurricane-force winds, there is widespread destruction and displacement.
The town of Lahaina, Maui, has been virtually wiped out, with the blaze taking countless homes, community spaces, businesses, and landmarks like Lahaina’s banyan tree. The harm extends beyond the physical — communities also deal with shocking historical, cultural, and economic losses.
We send strength and extend our deepest condolences to the victims who are grappling with the devastating loss of life, livelihood, and security. And we send our support to those who are still fighting to contain the fires and bring immediate relief to those impacted.
We also recognize that economically disadvantaged families and Indigenous communities, who were already experiencing disproportionately high levels of displacement and homelessness, often bear the brunt of such calamities. As recovery efforts continue, we must therefore ensure the equitable allocation of resources and assistance.
Please join us in supporting the local communities in Maui and across the Hawaiian Islands who are coming together to drive mutual aid and other disaster recovery efforts. We recommend contributing to one of the following fundraisers: |
