Unvaccinated People Account for 94 Percent of the New
Coronavirus Cases in Pennsylvania
The vast majority of Pennsylvanians
who have contracted the coronavirus in 2021 were not vaccinated, according to
a press conference held at Lancaster General Health's Suburban Pavilion with Michael
Ripchinski, MD, a chief clinical officer of Penn Medicine Lancaster
General Health, and Pennsylvania’s acting health secretary, Alison Beam.
“When fully vaccinated people develop symptoms from COVID-19 in a
breakthrough infection, they tend to be less severe symptoms,” Ripchinski
said. “Those who are vaccinated are much less likely to be hospitalized or to
die.” Philadephia Inquirer • The Sentinel • Pittsburgh Post-Gazette • WFMZ (Allentown) • FOX43 (Harrisburg) • WGAL • Trib Live • ABC27 (Harrisburg) |

I Need to Worry About the Mu Variant?
Yet another variant is being mentioned in discussions about the pandemic these days. Its name is Mu, and after being discovered in Colombia in January, it’s now found across the globe. Frederic D. Bushman, Ph.D., the chair of Microbiology
and co-director of the Penn Center for Research on Coronaviruses and Other
Emerging Pathogens, and his team are sequencing genomes of the virus from
samples collected in Philadelphia and elsewhere in the Delaware Valley.
Bushman said they have seen Mu pop up and that it’s been around for several
months, but only in about 1 percent of cases. |
