2021年6月17日，美国总统拜登签署了国会两院通过的《6月19日独立日法》(Juneteenth National Independence Day Act)，将6月19日定为最新的美国联邦假日，以纪念美国内战（1861-1865）中奴隶制的终结、最后一批奴隶获得解放的日子。奴隶制如何引爆了美国内战？谁在内战中解放了奴隶？获得解放的奴隶为何在（第一次）重建（1863-1877）结束之后丧失了平等的公民地位和权利？他们又如何重新获得平等的公民地位和权利？20世纪50、60年代的民权运动为何被称为是“第二次重建”？本讲座将围绕上述问题展开叙述，勾画黑白美国人在19-20世纪为废除奴隶制和种族歧视而进行的艰苦卓绝的漫长斗争经历，比较两次“重建”的进程与得失，并讨论当前美国种族关系面临的挑战。
王希教授，美国宾夕法尼亚州印第安纳大学（Indiana University of Pennsylvania）历史系教授，美国哥伦比亚大学历史系美国史专业博士，美国哈佛大学W·E·B·杜波伊斯非裔美国人研究所博士后研究员暨非裔美国人研究系讲师（1993-1994），2005年起任北京大学历史系长江学者讲座教授，2008-2020年任北京大学历史系特聘教授。曾任The Chinese Historical Review主编（2003-2014），美国历史学家组织（OAH）国际委员会委员（2014-2017）。
王希教授的主要研究领域为19世纪美国史,美国内战与重建,美国黑人史,美国宪政发展,美国国家制度与公民建设。著述包括：The Trial of Democracy: Black Suffrage and Northern Republicans, 1860-1910 （1997, 2012）； “The Making of Federal Enforcement Laws, 1870-1872” in Chicago-Kent Law Review (1995)； “Black Suffrage and the Redefinition of American Freedom, 1860-1870” in Cardozo Law Review (1996)； “Building African American Voting Rights in the Nineteenth Century” in The Voting Rights Act: Securing the Ballot (2006)； “Make ‘Every Slave Free, Every Freeman a Voter’: The African American Construction of Suffrage Discourse in the Age of Emancipation” in Contested Democracy: Freedom, Race, and Power in American History (2007)； 《原则与妥协：美国宪法的精神与实践》（2000，修订版2005， 增订版2014）; 《世界历史：西方国家政治制度》（2011）; 译有《美国自由的故事》（2002），《给我自由：一部美国的历史（上下卷）》（2010），《重建：美利坚未完成的革命（1863-1877）》（待出）。
洪朝辉，美国马里兰大学美国史博士，现为美国纽约福坦莫大学（Fordham University）教授。发表中英文学术专著五部、主编和合编五部、学术论文百余篇。主要研究领域为经济史。主要代表作：《左右之间，两极之上：适度经济学思想导论》、《社会经济变迁的主题：美国现代化进程新论》、The Price of China's Economic Development: Power, Capital, and the Poverty of Rights等。
刘亚伟为中美印象网站主编，美国外交学会会员，亚特兰大中国研究中心副主任，埃默里大学政治学系兼职教授。1982年在西安外国语学院获得学士学位，1989年在夏威夷大学获得美国历史硕士学位，1996年在埃默里大学获得美国外交史博士学位。1998年进入卡特中心工作，2008年出任中国项目主任。中美印象网站（cn3.uscnpm.org） 创办于2014年9月，是全球唯一专门关注中美关系的中文网站。

Profile
America Seen through Chinese Lenses
Professor Wang Xi 王希 specializes in the political history of the 19th-century United States and teaches courses on American Civil War and Reconstruction, African American history, and US Constitutional History, in addition to Liberal Studies courses. His seminars cover such topics as slavery, citizenship, suffrage, and American state- and nation-building.
He is the author of The Trial of Democracy: Black Suffrage and Northern Republicans, 860–1910 (1997), Principles and Compromises: The Spirit and Practice of the American Constitution Expanded Edition* (2014); and Political Systems of the Western Countries* (co-authored, 2011). His edited and co-edited books include: Eric Foner, Political Legacies of the Nineteenth Century United States* (2020); Trans-Pacific Conversations: Doing History in a Global Age* (2017), Pathmakers: Conversations with Renowned Historians* (2015), Chongqing in Historical China and World: Selected Papers on Chongqing History* (2013); and Discovering History in America: Reflections of Chinese Historians in the United States* (2010). [*In Chinese] His research articles appear in academic journals in the United States and China, including the Civil War History and Historical Research.
He has translated a number of books from English into Chinese, including Eric Foner’s The Story of American Freedom (2002), Give Me Liberty: An American History (2010), American History: Ideals and Realities (2017). He served as the chief-editor of The Chinese Historical Review from 2003 to 2014.
A native of China, Wang Xi regularly lectures at Peking University, China, where he holds a Changjiang Professorship in the History Department and has trained PhD and MA students in US history.
